“You can have anything you want if you are willing to give up the belief that you can’t have it.”
– Robert Anthony
WOW. How's that for a powerful quote? Let that sink in a minute... "You can have ANYTHING you want.. IF...you are willing to give up the belief that you CAN'T have it."
Have there been times in your life that you've doubted yourself? Told yourself something was not for you? Held yourself back?
I love hearing stories from our Walk 15 Instructors...as well as from people in Walk 15 classes, who are doing things now that they wouldn't have imagined just a short time ago...like this one:
"I learned that my debilitating disease was not going to define me for the rest of my life. I learned that even though I have many bad days I can shine on the good days and make the best of them. I learned that exercise does not have to be a thousand percent for those of us with limitations and that starting small and going at our own pace was going to get us stronger and further than we ever imagined."
When we want to try something new...that's CHANGE...and, even if it's exciting and positive, change can be scary.
In fact...our brain goes to work in seconds after we get an idea! Sometimes, the brain starts filling us up with reason after reason as to what we can't do whatever it is we are thinking of doing.
The most successful people on the planet have an ability to BREAK THROUGH those "Demons of Doubt" (as some life coaches call it), and... even though they may be scared...THEY DO IT ANYWAY!
How can we work to keep those doubts away...get out of our own way...and take the ACTION needed to create the lives we want?
It's about mindset...and we have a lot more power over ourselves than you may think. You do have the ability to re-train your brain...
Believe in yourself and what's in your heart...it's there for a reason. BOLDLY do what you feel is best for you. Even if you're not quite sure how you're going to get there...move in that direction. Believe you'll find your way.
Also, adopt a new way of responding to those "Demons of Doubt". Quickly acknowledge them...be thankful for the self-awareness, take any lesson from them, then...MOVE ON!
As you do, you'll likely be treated to many GOOD THINGS happening along the way...like LIGHTS illuminating your path!
The rewards are HUGE when you are courageous enough to break through your blocks! Hear what some more of our Walk 15 Instructors have to say about what they've learned about themselves through teaching Walk 15 classes:
> "Being a Walk 15 Instructor has taught me that I can do ANYTHING as long as I work hard; that being fit and healthy at any age is PRICELESS; and that I'm no longer scared of stepping out of my comfort zone from time to time!"
> "I am capable of doing much more than I think I can do, more to come!"
> "I've learned to LOVE me - 6 and a half years ago, I couldn't have said that and meant it."
> "Being a walk 15 instructor has shown me that I am indeed a stronger woman NOW than ever before....physically, mentally, and emotionally....its all connected!"
> "I am stronger mentally and physically than I think I am. I have severe arthritis in about every joint of my body and in pain most days. By teaching my classes people can see that they can also do these classes with health issues."
> Becoming a Walk Instructor 7 years ago has helped me become more confident in myself.
> "I discovered that I can be a real motivator and lift people through my class, make them love their workout!"
Can you believe the POWER in these comments?
Now... What if you believed in yourself?
What would happen next if you did?

Group fitness has gone through many changes since the aerobics classes of the early 80's (which is exactly when the Walk fitness program that started Walk 15 began)!
The role of the group fitness instructor has also changed...Instructors are considered "ambassadors" of WELLNESS in their communities. Students look to them for guidance that they'll use during the work out, but also as they walk out the door after class!
Great energy and motivation still bring people into classes...studies show students want that, and more from an Instructor:
1. Education: people want to be sure the Instructor is certified, can run an effective and safe class, and keeps up to date on the latest fitness information, by staying connected to a support group, which is why Walk 15 has the Walk Instructor Network (WIN) as a support hub!
2. Communication skills: verbal and non-verbal communication is key to building confidence and community in a group fitness class. This is great for helping people reach their goals.
3. Leadership skills: everything from being welcomed to class, to keeping everyone on the same during class, an Instructor is a group exercise leader-who works to keep everyone involved. The instructor is also a role model for healthy lifestyle.
4. A Motivator: what keeps class members coming back to class? The energy of the instructor helps keep students motivated! When passion comes through, it's magnetic! People can sense when someone genuinely cares about helping them better their lives, and they're drawn to that person.
After gathering this information, it made me want to ask our Walk 15 Instructors WHY they decided to become certified with our program...their answers make me so happy!
Why did YOU become a Walk 15 Instructor?
"I've always wanted to be an Intructor to show people just how simple and fun losing weight can be....and here I am!!"
-Jenn Thompson, (lost weight with the Walk at Home program)
"To keep myself motivated and to help others with their fitness journey."
"To share the joy of movement! ❤️❤️❤️"
Madison County, Illinois
"Why? Because I have been exercising my entire life- tried everything. [This]is the only fitness program that made sense to me, that I really enjoyed... I had the opportunity to take over some fitness classes for my aerobics teacher (at our local school), and teaching WALK15 [has been] the perfect solution for folks that gave up on fitness because: it's too hard, not enjoyable, too expensive, and not sustainable for long term. For that 1 hour, we are all moving our bodies, sweating, laughing, singing to the music, and forgetting about our troubles. It's a good thing😉"
Levittown, New York
"I have shared Walk at Home with so many people through out the years and when I finally had the opportunity to become a walk 15 instructor I had to do it!"
-Nicole Mason Parks
New York, New York
"To spread HAPPINESS to my local communities!"
"I've been a dedicated fan and follower since the very beginning. It's the only fitness program that makes me HAPPY as well as healthy and now I love sharing it with others. Seeing their smiles makes it all worthwhile!"
"I wanted to share everything I experience through this program - the mental, emotional and spiritual benefits, the pure JOY, the inner strength & confidence, the self worth... pure GOLD."
"I want to help people move to improve!"
Brownstown Charter Township, Michigan
"I became a Walk Instructor so I could share my fitness journey and impact as many people as possible availing them of this walking based program!"
"To help others, especially seniors, understand that moving, being healthy and having fun could all be accomplished through one Amazing workout called Walk 15!"
Newburgh, New York
If group fitness is new to you, know that making the time to find a class and an instructor that "fit" your energy is worth the effort! Being able to look forward to a workout that doesn't feel like work is a blessing!

Although we've been walking our way for 30 years(!)...it's awesome to see we're still right on trend!

5. Strength Training: Remains important for all ages and fitness levels; people especially look for strength training classes combined with aerobic activity and flexibility work.
4. Body Weight Training: Intimidated by exercise machines, many want programs that help them use their own body weight to strengthen themselves, along with balance and flexibility.
3. Wearable Technology: Trackers of all kinds remain popular as on-board accountability partners!
2. Group Training: Less expensive that personal training, plus the community feel of group exercise has been proven to help people reach and maintain wellness goals. Walk 15 is the group fitness version of the incredibly popular Walk at Home program!
1. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): Little spurts of high intensity make a big difference in your workout, and your results! Our Walk 15 Instructors have the opportunity to have HIIT training as part of their continuing education, and several are already including this variation in their Walk 15 classes with lots of positive feedback!

Some people STILL don't think of walking when they need weight loss...maybe it sounds too simple? Too good to be true?
Well, it IS true...WALKING WORKS FOR WEIGHT LOSS, and there's plenty of science to back up that great message!
In an article in Prevention magazine, Dr. Art Weltman, the director of exercise physiology at the University of Virginia says, "Fast-paced walking, when combined with healthy eating, is hugely effective for weight loss."
If you're strolling like a window-shopper versus a fitness walker, you may need to step up your pace a bit---enough to feel challenged---to see faster results. Our Walk 15 Group Fitness classes use music to keep you at the speed you need for serious fat-burning!
Studies show that women who walk at a higher intensity pace three times a week lose up to six times more abdominal fat than those who walked at a light to moderate pace five times a week! Both groups burned calories, but the faster-paced walkers blasted those bellies, too!
Walking is an easy-to-follow workout, it's easy on the joints, but still delivers a punch with increased metabolism...trust your WALK 15 workout to deliver on your wellness AND weight loss goals!
One huge study that followed more than 50,000 adults over thirteen years found that those who walked for fitness were thinner than those who just hit the gym, or only practiced high intensity workouts!
The study showed that 30 minutes a day of brisk walking linked to lower body mass index, and a bigger reduction in belly fat as compared to non-walkers.
So if you think that something as "little" as walking isn't enough...think again! Little things done consistently bring BIG results!
Meet some of our Walk 15 Instructors who are living proof of that!
KAREN ULRICH LOST 77 POUNDS!
Karen Ulrich is a Walk 15 Instructor in Stow, OH. Her sister died at age 43, and Karen says a main contributing factor was obesity. Her family was worried, and so was she. Karen started walking with our Walk at Home program and lost 77 pounds!!! With her new energy, she jumped for the chance of becoming a Walk 15 Instructor, and helping others with better health and weight loss! “It's all been an incredible blessing in my life,” Karen says.
RACHEL DeVaughn LOST 80 POUNDS!
Rachel says, "After I had my last baby 7 years ago, I was over 250 pounds and obese. I had tried boot camps and other fitness classes but they were too hard which left me frustrated, hurting, and discouraged. My mother introduced me to Walk at Home dvds, and I decided to try them out. " Rachel lost over 80 pounds with our Walking program and she says that made her want to do more! "I became a Walk15 Instructor so I could share my love of Fitness Walking with others. I don't want anyone to feel discouraged and helpless like I did several years ago. I love teaching weekly classes in my community and I absolutely love hearing about the successes of my students!"
I was reading through some health statistics recently, and I'm still shocked at the numbers.
The lack of regular physical activity in our world is actually mind-blowing!
How sad is this?!
How many do YOU know who make up those statistics?
Many health and fitness experts are calling for Community-Based fitness programs to help reverse these scary trends. Local government's are seeing the benefits as they have worked to get people in their neighborhoods moving more by supporting the creation of more outdoor biking and walking trails, and designating more indoor activity space.
The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention supports programs to decrease obesity and illness; and reports positive changes that even go beyond the important health benefits!:
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Our Walk 15 Instructors are doing their part! They're helping people in communities all around the world realize the life-changing results of exercise, and they're having FUN doing it!
FAITH IS A FITNESS BOOSTER!
Have you ever thought about it like that?
It’s true! In fact, a Baptist Minister in Virginia who turned to his faith for help with losing weight (he ended up losing 100 pounds!) calls the Bible, “a Health Book”! In interviews, the pastor said when he connected to the idea that his body is a temple, and should be treated as such, he was able to make healthy changes like “eating good stuff that God made” and "trading his recliner for activity"! He was able to lost 100 pounds, and guide others to make happier, healthier lifestyle choices!
Walk at Home creator Leslie Sansone says “I was never shy about keeping a spiritual theme in my classes.” Leslie taught her very first Aerobics Class in a Church Hall with Gospel music!!! … and she sang … (out of tune) …. and LOUD!!! That’s what happens when the SPIRIT MOVES YOU!
“It seems perfect to me that it all started in church basements,” says Leslie. “It was my calling after all; the best way for me to fulfill my Christian commitment to serve God by serving others.”
WALKing is a SMART choice that connects us to body, mind, and soul…

We like to talk about the physical benefits of exercise (lower blood pressure, a healthy heart, slimmer body) but social scientists have been gathering evidence for at least the last fifteen years on another important, immediate benefit of exercise: a positive impact on the way we think!
Studies show a direct link between exercise and brain power, and employers care a great deal about that! In general, we know that exercise elevates mood which in and of itself has a big impact on the workplace…but look at these other benefits of adding exercise into your workday:
YES, PLEASE, to all of that…right?!
A Leeds Metropolitan University study took a look at how exercise during the workday impacted office workers.
Employees self-reported their performance daily, and then the study measured productivity on days when they exercised, and days where they didn’t.
On days when employees visited the gym, time management was better, more work was completed, they had better interactions with colleagues, and they felt more satisfied at the end of the day. WOW!
How can you help yourself, and your workplace, get these same great results?
The response was so great, the company designated an entire floor of their building as an “ER" …. Exercise Room! They host Walk 15 classes with a Certified Walk 15 Leader daily for employees!
And how about this FUN FACT? QVC Corporate Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA was one of the first workplaces to add Walk 15 Classes to their corporate wellness program!
Companies large and small offer Walk 15 Classes for their employees!
Corporations use Walk 15 Classes in their Wellness Events and Programs!
Interested in starting a Walk 15 class where you work? We’d love to help you spread the healthy benefits of fitness walking! Check out our Walk Instructor Certification program!
Winter has a way about it, doesn't it? Those up and down temperatures, less sunshine, struggling to get caught up after the holidays...it can leave you pretty worn out, and more susceptible to a cold.
The good news is, you can boost your immunity with something you LOVE to do---fitness walking!
Health studies show a definite link between your lifestyle and the strength of your immune system. Adopting good health habits can help your immune system do the important work of protecting you from germs, viruses, and other illness.
Regular, moderate exercise, like a daily 30-minute walk is all you need. Medical studies show that walking increases the amount of immune system cells in your body...and...those levels stay elevated for several hours after exercise!
A WebMD article says flat out... if you don't get enough exercise, you're more likely to get colds.
Put down the tissues...get up and walk!
How are you doing this month? Walking can get you back on track!
Health experts continue to recommend 30 minutes of exercise each day to maintain and improve your health and wellness. Think about how our Walk 15 classes can make that goal easy...attainable...heck...even FUN!
Our programs get you moving at a 15-minute mile pace...walk to just two of those, and you're there! There's also a lot of power in the idea of never walking alone...in fact, a physical therapist at Johns Hopkins says walking with a friend increases your chances or sticking with your exercise routine, and provides important support when making a lifestyle change.
So...if you're looking at your calendar beating yourself up for already dropping away from those goals you set for yourself this January, realize that every day... every hour...every minute represents a new opportunity for you to take a first step to a change that will help to keep you healthy and strong for many New Years to come!
Let go of anything that feels heavy---forgive yourself---you didn't blow it! Choose to lace up and start walking in a better-feeling direction today!
There's even more science and research to back the proven healthy MENTAL benefits of working out with your friends!
A new study published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association shows that people who participate in group exercise classes like Walk 15, showed "significant" improvement in mental, physical, and emotional health over those who worked out alone.
"The communal benefits of coming together with friends and colleagues, and doing something difficult, while encouraging one another, pays dividends beyond exercising alone," said Dayna Yorks, DO, lead researcher on the study.
It was pretty interesting WHO the study tracked, too. They recruited highly stressed medical students who reported a "low quality of life" on a survey. The researchers asked the group to choose a 12-week workout plan, either group fitness or individual exercise. Another group didn't do any formal exercise for the 12 weeks.
We know that all exercise improves our mental health by releasing feel-good endorphins, the chemical that makes you feel happy, increase self-esteem, and manage anxious feelings.
Could working out in a group boost that even more?
The students checked in every four weeks, and were asked to rate their mental, physical, and emotional stress. After 12 weeks:
The students in the group fitness classes showed dramatic improvements:
The students who worked out by themselves reported no reduction in stress level, and no increase in overall quality of life. They did report an 11% improvement in mental health, however!
Exercise WORKS anyway you do it...but those added benefits from being part of a group are just another reason why we love WALKing TOGETHER!
Walk yourself HAPPY this month!
